Yes, 26.2 miles is a long way. You can't finish even half marathon without a period time of training. But  Boston 
 
Marathon sells out in a day! Why would so many sane person so enjoy in running a marathon?

Release your emotion

Running a 5-mile will melt away and bad emotions. You'll feel so wonderful when you're done that you will temporarily forget what you were so upset or stressed about.

Health benefits

Running over a long period of time, which is required to train for marathons, provides benefits in abundance. Many people will go out and jog a few miles for the health benefits, now you can try running longer.

For other outdoor activities

If you have a poor body image and often find yourself complaining about your body, training a marathon will give you a new respect for your body and what it can accomplish. It will help you in the other outdoor activities, such as backpacking.
